Dutch Trade Mission to Indonesia Highlights Water Cooperation and Innovative Water Footprint Tools
During the recent Dutch trade mission to Indonesia, water was high on the agenda. With a long-standing collaboration between the two countries in the water sector, the mission reaffirmed their shared ambition to tackle water challenges—ranging from flood protection to water scarcity and urban water resilience.
Johan Oost of Water Footprint Implementation (WFI) joined this mission to Jakarta and Semarang. Johan participated together with other organizations (Invest International, SNV – Dutch Fund for Climate Development,Asian Development Bank – ADB and Asian Investment Infrastructure Bank – AIIB) in the Financing for Water Roundtable, organized by the Netherlands Water Partnership (NWP).
This session gathered key stakeholders to explore investment mechanisms and partnerships that can finance water solutions in Indonesia. Johan emphasized that innovative ways of financing, is key to private sector engagement in sustainable water development. He presented the latest tools and developments for water footprint reporting and compensation, tailored for businesses seeking to improve their water stewardship.
His presentation focused on how companies can measure, report, and actively reduce their water use impact through tangible action. Which included presenting the water footprint compensation project in Semarang, execuded by two of our partners VEI and WaterWorX. A project where businesses are invited to offset their water use by investing in reducing non-revenue water (NRW)—the water lost through leakages or metering inaccuracies. This project offers a practical solution for companies to contribute to local water availability and aligns with both environmental goals and upcoming ESG reporting requirements.
In conclusion the Dutch trade mission was a succes!
