Kickstarting Calculations for Impact
The journey of Water Footprint Compensation has continued, with the first round of calculations led by Craig and Tariro from Water Footprint Implementation for five impactful projects brought forward by our partners in the Coalition of the Willing. These projects represent the intersection of innovation and sustainability, fostering a marketplace where water stewardship meets compensators.
This progress builds on commitments made during the UN 2023 Water Conference in New York and was formalized through Coalition discussions on October 31, 2024 (read more here).
Highlighting Five Projects in Action
- Non-Revenue Water Solutions: Addressing water losses in Semarang, Indonesia (by WaterWorx / VEI).
- Constructed Wetlands for Sanitation: A nature-based wastewater treatment system in Adama, Ethiopia (by Blue Deal / World Waternet).
- Sustainable Water Management: Adaptive solutions for water challenges in Texel, Netherlands (by Acacia Water).
- Ecosystem Restoration: Removing invasive water hyacinths in Southern Africa (Khalistan project).
- Wetland Rejuvenation: Revitalizing Makhasa Wetland in collaboration with the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Wetskills, building on WFI’s work with the 11th Hour Racing Team.
Key Insights: Constructed Wetlands for Sanitation in Adama
A significant milestone was achieved on October 9, 2024, in Adama, Ethiopia, with the inauguration of an artificial wetland for wastewater treatment. This nature-based solution, funded by the NWB Fund and supported by World Waternet, serves 700 residents across three condominium blocks, improving water quality and promoting environmental health.
The project’s success stems from a strong partnership with the Dembela community and Adama Water Utility, ensuring local ownership and long-term sustainability. As part of the Water Footprint Compensation method, the wetland reduces the water footprint by optimizing wastewater treatment processes. The first impact results are expected in January 2025.
