2025: a year of acceleration in water compensation and water reporting

We look back on a year of strong international growth, marked by major progress in both water compensation and water reporting. Through new partnerships, platform launches, and global visibility, we have expanded our role as a key driver of responsible water stewardship worldwide.

In 2025, our position globally got strengthened in water footprint compensation with several collaborations. On of these exciting collaborations happened at the beginning of the year, we signed a new partnership with Act4Water and Water Footprint Network (WFN). This marked a new step in uniting shared ambitions to accelerate water sustainability. This partnership has brought us more insight, but we were also honored to get nominated by Water Europe as a finalist for the Innovation Award

An exciting development of the year is our Water Footprint Compensation Platform, designed to offer companies a transparent and credible way to compensate for their water footprint. Several compensation projects are already identified and calculated, and active at the platform, showing the need and possibilities in water positive solutions. In parallel, we are preparing an establishment of Water Footprint Implementation South Africa, soon to be officially launched, to further strengthen on-the-ground implementation capacity.

In addition to compensation developments, we improved our water reporting services. The Water Footprint Assessment Tool was significantly updated with enhanced business features and better usability, helping companies accurately measure, understand, and act on water impacts. We also created a new Water Materiality List version, providing a clearer framework for organizations to prioritize water-related risks and dependencies. Our new abilities in water reporting were introduced with different webinars, and this was a success! It not only created more visibility, but we even already started a couple of collaborations.

For 2026,  we will work on improving the created ecosystem for companies to be involved in water solutions, both reporting and compensation. Looking one time back to 2025, the webinar with NBI showcased this. This webinar showed the complete possibility of accounting your water footprint until the compensation possibilities with certified projects. The continue scaling with new solutions to support business will not stop in 2025. We will adapt to the needs but mostly we will keep counting water, because water counts.
