Invitation to shape the common Water Materiality Checklist

Access to clean and abundant water is vital for global economic stability and growth. Yet, many companies underestimate their reliance on water and the impacts of their operations and supply chains on water resources. This often leads to water being incorrectly deemed ‘immaterial,’ even in critical contexts like CSRD reporting.

Having been inspired by conversations with our clients and partners, we wanted to create a simple and easy checklist to counter the possible complications in navigating water for businesses. In doing so, Water Footprint Implementation has developed the first edition of the Water Materiality Checklist to help organizations become aware of the importance of water in their operations and supply chains. As a starting point for this conversation, we have chosen the following two critical factors to focus on:

  1. Industry Sector – Identifying sectors with significant water dependencies and impacts.
  1. Geographic Regions – Highlighting areas where water-related risks and challenges are particularly pronounced.

The checklist is designed to provide a straightforward starting point for businesses to assess the materiality of water and determine whether it should be prioritized in their strategies and reporting. It also serves as a foundation for conducting more detailed materiality analyses.

Built on previous work by Ceres under the Valuing Water Initiative, this tool emphasizes the essential connection between water and business sustainability.
