Project: Texel Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) System
Texel, one of the Wadden Islands in The Netherlands, faces significant water management challenges due to seasonal rainfall patterns and high groundwater salinity.
To address water scarcity and improve agricultural resilience, the Zoete Toekomst Texel (‘Fresh Future Texel’) initiative implemented a Managed Aquifer Recharge (MAR) system. This innovative project enables the underground storage of freshwater for later use, ensuring sustainable water availability for farmers.
Quantifying the Impact
By the methodology of CAP (Credit Aqua Positive), the Texel MAR system is projected to generate 326 CAPs over a ten-year period. This corresponds to 325,862 m³ of water savings, combining both blue water (stored rainwater) and grey water (reduced pollutant loads). The cost-effectiveness of this solution is remarkable, with an estimated investment of €548.57 per CAP.
Social and Environmental Co-Benefits
Beyond direct water savings, the Texel MAR system provides significant additional benefits:
- Improved Agricultural Yields: A trial plot of seed potatoes using MAR-stored water showed a 22% increase in yield, generating an additional €1,550 per hectare.
- Water Security for Farmers: Reducing reliance on expensive, imported water from the mainland.
- Sustainable Water Management: The system reduces freshwater losses and prevents excessive groundwater salinization.
Looking Ahead
The Texel MAR system demonstrates the potential of innovative water storage solutions in tackling global water challenges. Similar MAR initiatives could be replicated in other regions facing water scarcity due to seasonal rainfall patterns.
Companies with a water footprint in the area can take action to lower their water impact by investing in these kinds of MAR initiatives.
