Update: Water Compensation Projects

Project: Khayelitsha Wetland Rehabilitation, South Africa

Located in Cape Town, the Khayelitsha Wetland suffers from pollution, invasive plant species, and waste accumulation. The Khayelitsha Wetland Rehabilitation Project focuses on restoring the wetland’s natural functions, enhancing water storage, and improving community engagement. This project has been created together with 11th Hour Racing Team, Water Footprint Implementation, Wetskills and University of Cape Town

Quantifying the Impact

Through wetland restoration and pollution reduction, the project has generated 7,853.57 CAPs over four years, equivalent to 7.85 million m³ of improved water footprint. The intervention includes dredging, removal of invasive species, and bank widening, leading to better water retention and purification. The cost-effectiveness of this solution is remarkable, with an estimated investment of €13.44 per CAP.

Social and Environmental Co-Benefits

  • Community Involvement: Local residents engaged in cleanup efforts.
  • Recreational Benefits: Restoration supports canoeing and eco-tourism.
  • Water Quality Improvements: Reduction in nitrogen and phosphate pollution.

Looking Ahead

By addressing pollution and ecological degradation, this project sets a precedent for urban wetland rehabilitation. Future efforts should integrate community-driven maintenance and climate resilience planning.
