In 2020 Water Footprint Implementation was commissioned by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC) under the Blue Peace Initiative, to perform a Water Footprint Assessment for 5 Central Asian countries: Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan and Turkmenistan.

The assessment comprised a water footprint analysis of the production and consumption of each of the five countries and at the Amu Darya and Syr Darya river basins level, a virtual water trade analysis internally between the countries and externally between the region and the rest of the world, and an economic analysis of this virtual water trade.

The results of the study aim to inform the transboundary dialogue on integrated water resource management in the region and feed into the Blue Peace Central Asia programme.

At the beginning of this year, China Water Risk published an interview with WFI Director Ioana Dobrescu, taking their readers through some of the main takeaways of the study.

The full interview can be found on the CWR website.
